In the early 1980's, Larry Flint and the Newport Parks & Rec Department started a 5K race called the Newport Road Race.  With help from the Waterman family, the race grew and became known as the Sunshine 5K.  This annual event continued until it ended 1996.

Lori Richer and the Newport Montessori School, with the help of Scott Blewitt and the Newport Rec Department brought the race back to life in May 2009.  With a short time to prepare and some questionable weather on race day, the first race back fielded 74 registered runners.  A 1K Kids Fun Run was added which had several young runners participating.  For the first year return, the race day was quite the success.
